Honokoa Bay, Kaho'olawe, derived its name from the koa trees that grew abundantly on the shores and uplands of Kaho'olawe in this area. The bay and beach fall within the land area of Honokoa 'ili, and the area is known deep wide channel that enters into the bay, and ends in a sandy beach.

This area recorded media attention with the visit of King David Kalakaua in 1875, and further recorded that this area was inhabited by a small Hawaiian community. This area is known as being a rich fishing area, so it is presumable that the inhabitants were able to fish and maintain livestock in this area.

Like the rest of Kaho'olawe, this area was denuded of regional trees by centuries of over use and deforestation. The general low lie of Kaho'olawe commands very little rainfall from passing sea clouds, so fresh water has always been an issue for regrowth and general consumption use on the Island. This however translates into very clear scuba diving conditions from minimal fresh water run-off contributed by rain.

Honokoa Bay is also synonymous with the Hawaiian Ohana cleanup effort of Kaho'oolawe. Many landing parties through the years have used Honokoa Bay as their destination location from Maui, Lanai, the big Island, and Molokai.

Honokoa Bay is not available for touring, swimming, snorkeling or beachcombing. Please respect this beach, Honokoa Bay and the adjacent waters as per the nautical guidelines.
